I am rebuilding an 81 mini.

it is a lovely orange red (dont know what type of paint), over the original blue.

I have been welding and filling dents and now finishing patches off with Hycote primer/filler spray (its all i can get here) it says it is acrylic.

it is reacting horribly with the orange paint.

anybody know what can be done or will I have to sand it all off and start from the blue paint surface.

as far as i am aware you will probally have to remove that paint and make sure you clean it well. a friend of mine had a similar problem with his bonnet,

Kerrin the safest way around your problem for you is to flat the reactions out with 600’s wet n dry (do this wet). Then buy a product called BARCOAT which is an automotive sealer especially for problems like you have.

Stir the BARCOAT well and pour it strait into your gun DO NOT ADD THINNERS to it. Then apply one even coat only to the areas that have reacted, re-prime, block back and then apply your top coat colour.

Most painters would just block the reactions out then bake the car and apply a couple of dust coats to stop it happening again, but you don’t have a booth to do this in, or do you?

And make sure you dont break through the barcoat when you flat it down or you will be back to square one

One more thing, DO NOT FLAT the barcoat before you primer over it.

Thanks for your comments.

I dont have a booth but do have the compressor spray gun etc.

I was going to prepare the car up to primer and then pay my local friendly repair shop to do the top coats. however I had pictures of a big bill if it reacted again.

I will try and get some barcoat tomorrow and get it prepped.

Thanks again
