last week i sealed up my diff using a single bead of clear granville rtv from halfords..

i am worrying i have not used enough sealant as its not really come out the sides much compared to other rebuilds i have seen.

so i went shopping and have bought a large tube - see below. is this suitable for use? i just ask because it says its for gasket filling but does not mention engine oil on the tube.

It will be fine, we use same stuff at work for everything from engine re builds to fitting exhausts sealing up just about anything.

If you do use any type of sealant make sure the mating surfaces are entirely free of oil, grease etc. You don't need to see any excess coming out, if you do then its going to be doing the same inside and will work its way into the oil system.

A thin smear should be sufficient, if all the mounting faces are square to each other then that will be enough.

I have seen an engine suffer from oil starvation due to too much Hylomar being used on engine assembly and it clogged up the oil pick screen.

As already stated, use sparingly! I've just had to replace the gearbox in my clubby due several oil ways in the gearbox being blocked up by bits of silicone sealent thanks to a previous owners love of the stuff.
