Ok so i have a stainless steel exhaust system and the autosol is able to get the black gritty cemety crap off to a certain extent but there is still loads. I know it can come off because if i rub the same spot for about 10 minutes it starts to come off and the residue on it is raised and hense will come off with more abrasion but i dont want to scratch the stainless steel.

What would be the next step in removing all of this crap?

Chemicals?
sand paper?

other method?

Thanks

What is the crap? tar? try thinners. Sand paper would scratch it.

The crap is like black tar gritty specs which i can feel is raised when i scratch it with my finger nail. If i really go for it with the autosol aiming at only 1 tiny spec then it slowly decreases in size, and the yellow rag turns black.

thinners... paint thinners? I tried white spirit... that did nothing. If i use low grade 1200 wet and dry 30 mins soaked then it wont scratch will it and i can autosol it after?

Have you tried nail varnish remover? Removes a surprising amount of crap that other stuff doesnt. Failing that I would try celly thinners or a bit of petrol (obviously take the proper precautions if you do use petrol)

i have deduced that the only method to remove this stuff is wet and dry paper so im going to soak some 1200 and then give it a try.

Use the 1200 Wet and dry, that will be fine, then it will need polishing with autosol, if you have got a dremel, that will make it much easier to polish back up to a real nice shine.

I've used wire wool and autosol to get rid of this type of stuff before - just need a bit of a polish after

If you use wet and dry it will go blunt in seconds, completely pointless. Use thinners, or tar remover (basically the same thing..) then autosol. It works! I don't make this stuff up y'know.

If it's tar spots, white spirit will work. Just need to let it soak in a bit that's all.

As Peter said, thinners also which I would have thought would act a bit quicker.

you should try autosol and a scouring pad (the rough green bit on the back of you washing up cloth) and it should bring it up real nice but may need to polished afterwards aswell
