Right then people, I have got my front subframe pretty much stripped, just need to find a day off when I can finish it off and get it back to bare metal.

What I wanted to know is whats the best (not including powder coating) primer to use and what top coat?

I have done a few searches and came up with various answers.

In the garage I have an assortment of paints, so would any of these be usefull or is a trip to B&Q needed?

Aerosol zinc primer
Regular aerosol primer
Rust-oleum CombiPrimer - Anti Rust

ok so thats just 3, thought I had more before I started writing my list.

Also got a pot of Rust-oleum CombiColour

I'm going to assume it'd be wise to finish in stone-chip

but a layer by layer list would be very nice indeed.

E.g

Layer 1:

Layer 2:

Layer 3:

etc....

Thanks in advance

- Rich

I personally would get rid of any rust and flaking paint, rub it down with 180, paint it with rust inhibiting primer then chassis black. Rustroleum combi primer, and then rustoleum would work fine. No need for anything else, apart from the fact that just those two things would be fine, it complicates things by adding lots of layers and you;re more likely to get incompatibility and chemical reactions. Try putting stonechip on anything other than very thin etch primer or old hard paint you're almost definite to get a reaction.

A bit pricey, but 'POR15 Rust provention Paint' gets my vote every time. Read about it here http://www.por15.com/POR-15/productinfo/1GB/, buy in the UK from http://www.frost.co.uk.
Wire/rotary brush any loose rust off, degrease, prep with 'Metal Ready', then apply one coat. Stabilizes any rust and sets rock hard... very unlikely to chip.
Just try not to get it on your skin... takes an eternity to come off.

I had my front and rear subframes sand blasted and then I brushed POR 15 on it. Finish was fantastic. Follow the instructions verbatim and it will stay on forever.
