just want to double chek that tou actually know how to select reverse, I'm not trying to insult your inteligence but in order to select reverse you need to gor as far right as you can, lift the gear leaver up and then drop it all the way to wards the rear of the car. Just want to double check this is the way you have been trying to do it.

Not unheard of, a friend of mine, got a lot of mini's but got a phone call from him after installing one of my gearboxes in his latest project... "Can't get it into reverse.... " could not think what it was until about 10 minutes later, rang him back and said "You know you have to lift the lever to get it into reverse....." Doh !... he's always had 60's minis therefore remotes and magic wands which you don't need to lift for reverse..

Is this an autobox?
If so it could just need adjusting where the linkage enters the gearbox.

If a manual box....mmmm....maybe the roll pin has shifted a bit and binding on the diff. (?)

If not, check the roll-pin is fully in - if they come part-way out they can catch on the casing of the 'box, preventing reverse being selected,

Hello everybody. Just wondering what was the end of the story as I have the exact same problem tonight. I beeorking on my Mini City for a few years and this evening was ready for the first drive - just a drive around the house. But no reverse. 5 forwards but no reverse. My friend who is reat mechanic got in under the car and with a pair of grips was abl;e to select reverse.
Any idea what's the problem?

Thanks Vincent

Are you running a quick shift lever?

But no reverse. 5 forwards but no reverse.

Vince, have you a 5SPD box?

It's an ordinary box but can't access reverse from inside the car. If I go underneath with vicegrips yes I can get into reverse. A local sage suggests that the socket (I don't know the right term) into which the gear stick fits may be upside down. Could that be possible?
Got the Mini up on four boxes tonight and tried to remove rolling pin (or clevis pin or whatever it is) but had no luck. I have a mechanic friend coming tomorrow so hopefully he'll remobe the pin and see if we can turn the rod that ties the gear box to the gear stick around. There has to be a logical solution.
by the way when I do get the into reverse using the grips and look down into the socket where the gear stick fits it is obvious that there is no way the gearstick could fit into it as the hole is out of sight. Frustrating. Thanks for your replies. Vincie

Sorted everything today.Removed rolling pin, turned connecting rod 180 degrees, connected everything and, He Presto! my gears were right. Drove my mini up and down the road for the first time in 5 years. Tomorrow she goes off to have her final coat of paint. Thanks. Vincent
