If you are talking about welding body panels, i would go with .6 and argoshield (co2 with 5 % argon)

I use .6mm wire and Argoshield Light from B.O.C (co2 Argon mix) I have been using the .6 mm wire for over twenty years on car resto/repairs etc. Plenty thick enough for everything so far. Other members do use the .8mm wire but its down to personal choice really.

I used to use CO2 gas (pub bottles) but had trouble getting refills so now have a bottle on contract from B.O.C.

I use 1mm as it doesn't wear out the rollers in the feed system of the mig welder so quickly :D

as for gas argoshield mix gives a better cleaner weld with less flare and a very slightly advantage over CO2 where arc eye is concerned, argoshield has a lower flare than CO2.

I asked this question on TM and got a useful answer. http://www.turbomini...p...&tid=361352

I've still only ever used CO2

CO2 is ok for welding, it's just that argoshield or argon / CO2 mix is better :D

Of course before MIG welders where readily available a small arc welder was an option..... not necessarily a good one but an option anyway.

i use co2+argon mix, and 0.8mm wire, works fine! but some welders (i.e clarke ones, seem not to like this set up, ive had 3 clarke welders, never weld right!) i have a boc mig welder, which is basically the same as a snap-on mig welder, its donkey years old, got it from a farm! lol
