Will an Austin A35 engine be the same A series engine you find in a mini? It'll be a 1048 1963 in running order, i just need to know if it'll fit.

Cheers

nope, austin a35's are longitudal engines which run RWD through a propshaft, the cylinder head will be the same/ similar but the block will be totally different as the gearbox is not mounted to the bottom of the engine like the mini's. its exactly the same to a morris minor running gear aswell. I think this topic has already been covered on here somewhere , but i think a transplant has been done to allow a mini to run A-series RWD- if your looking to run it RWD i think you should look into it further or see if anyone else has converted it (as the A35 run on a Chassis and not Subframes which allowed the rear axle/diff to be mounted to it, whereas the mins dont)

Hope this sort of helps :D

but saying that A35's are getting really rare and a 948 is quite hard to get hold of, if you have the knowledge of engines this would be a good opertunity of a rebuild and a big profit as engines and cars are sought after :D

That'll be a 1098cc, the same as used in the later Morris Minor 1000s (If it's 1963, it'll be out of a van. Earlier A35s were 948cc and sedans never had the 1098cc engine). Although an A-series engine, it is not suitable for a Mini: The crankshaft is different and the Mini flywheel will not fit. There are also numerous differences in the block. Heads from these engines, however, can be use on equivalent Mini engines.

With certain mods it would be a lovely engine in an Austin-Healey 'Frog-Eye' Sprite. It can go out to 1115 cc and a Cooper 12G295 head will fit, plus flat-top pistons, a decent cam and twin SU's. I built one like that for a Sprite and it gave 74 bhp at 5600 rpm. Compared to the 48 bhp of the original it went like the clappers. Of course, it would not be wise to rev it to much over 6000 rpm.

although the A40 Farina had a 1048 :D

This was my first car, the Austin A40 Farina Mk II. It said it was a 948cc with 39bhp on the logbook but turned out to be a bit of an urban terrorist with a 1048cc with a heady 48bhp. The car had exquisite chromed doorhandles and headlight switch and a crackle black dash. The instruments were like a little radiogram with innocent dash lights and wipers that were either on or off.

small blocks can go out to 1260cc or so relatively easily...... but the other day I was told of someone who has successfully used 70.61mm pistons in a small block, I can't see this working unless they use liners though........

Anyway what are the cranks like in 948 is it similar to the 803cc ??
