On the assumption i will be finished and ready (see topic link) to get her on the road next year (yeah right!) I phone DVLA and asked what I needed to do about my log book as you are supposed to let them know about mods to the body, they said i should return the log book with the appropriate sections filled in and any photos, invoices etc that are relevant and within 2-4 weeks should return ok unless they think it needs an inspection,
Question is - as I'm not selling it is it worth going to all this hassle now especially if it has to be inmspected and what would happen if i didn't tell them? - i have told my insurance co and they are cool with it

Anyone any comments ?
cheers

cant see why you'd have to inform dvla, you've just done some 'basic' maintenance work

interesting - if i ring them again I'll probably get a different answer by the sound of it, i thought there were some rules about how much a body can be altered before it needs inspection - there might be a prob when it comes to the MoT if the description doesn't fit?

'basic' maintenance work" I like that - lol

It's a definite candidate for an IVA test.

think i'll have a word with my friendly MoT inspector , the IVA looks really extreme and most of the minis here would fail and at £450 it aint worth doing -
i looked into this and surprise surprise the SVA is a requirement of EC regs, what alot of b*lls*it, your going to tell me countries like spain greece and italy will comply with this crap, good old UK - falling over ourselves to please brussels...

anyone else got any thoughts - as long it has an MoT and the insurance is OK with it I can't see a problem

You will have to get an IVA test, simply because you have altered the shell. It's to check that all modifications have been done safely, and the car doesn't pose a risk to you or anyone else on the road.

If you search for Scampie or Minijee on here, you'll see my old project which was killed off by the IVA, and it had been on the road for years before I got it.

so presumably this applies to all the keiths convertibles, shorties, VTEC's, turbo's, flip fronts etc, etc that are on the road.....if thats the case then maybe the guy who sold me the kit should have warned me about the IVA, I might have thought twice about coughing £650 for a IVA......., its a bit of a laugh really when some of the standard cars I see that have "MoT's" really are not safe compared to someone who has spent alot of time modifying a car and ensuring it is safe.

yes your right and we are hearing more and more stories on car forums about people getting caught

if only people did a search on forums about this before going out and spending a lot of money or getting the grinder out :shifty:

It's a fair old can of worms, if you chose to cross your fingers and try to sneak it through an MoT would you be confident your insurers will cough up if the worst happened, and there'd be the ever present risk of being Miniless pending a £lots appointment with a VOSA station, at the very least.

As so many people here modify there minis maybe there should be a sticky with a warning about IVA's - my insurance company were cool and didn't mention an IVA - presumably on the basis that its very limited mileage and not a daily driver and the fact that i am a real enthusiast rather than some backyard bodger. I'd never be able to sell it but thats cool - why would I after putting that much work into it.

or your insurance company are happy to take your money now knowing that they can get out of paying later if anything happens

I've heard that the VOSA roadside checks you usually see pulling trucks are also pulling cars in, especially obviously modified ones.

My friend has a camper van with a Zetec lump in it, he got given a going over the other day, but his was all done and inspected by the DVLA a few years ago. The roadside inspector told him that it's a shame that this has come around, but it's the european law that's messed it all up for us.
