Just gearing up to do this, got a water in oil problem and nasty running, planning a compression test first before diving in but mechanic for mot suggested it needed doing soon. No white smoke, just a slightly milky oil. Suspect I may have blown it a while back doing 70 on the motorway! I don't think my little engine likes such high speeds!

Firstly, can I get anyone to do a compression test, and what kind of numbers am I looking for in the results?
Secondly, after reading a few things, I am confused as to what exactly I should replace while doing the gasket - new head studs - do I need to replace those (not sure whether the head has come off at all before now).
Thirdly, RTV or hylomar or something else on gaskets needing sealant?
Been recommended this http://www.minispare...=...2509&title= any comment?
If anyone would be so kind as to write me a shopping list of links to minispares that would be fantastically helpful!
Thanks

First Time Head Gasket Replacement.

Would be better with this

Full kit includes manifold gasket, head gasket , rocker cover and all the carb gaskets.
All the gaskets go on dry although a bit of sealant on the rocker cover does help keep it in place whilst tightening down.
On a compression test you want similar readings on all 4 cylinders, the actual values will vary from engine to engine. But if you have two next to each other that are a lot lower then it suggests problems in those cylinders.
Should be no need change anything else other than the gaskets
Just to add compression tester is £25 from Halfords http://www.halfords....tegoryId_165557
You will also need a torque wrench if you plan on doing the job yourself
So maybe cheaper than getting a garage check it if they decide to charge !!
