Hello people

I have a 1988 Mini Mayfair 998, and a few mounths ago I set up the valve clearances as the last haynes manual say, with a clearance of 0.53mm (0.20 inches). I tought that was quite a lot, the valve were at 0.16 inch more or less. My question is, is that right for A+ series, I've been looking in the forum and normaly you recommend 0.12 or 0.16 in the A series.

So is normal 0.20 for a A+series? if not, why the hell in the haynes manual say that?

Many thanks

0.020 is awfully wide.
Rover's official workshop manual says 0.3mm (0.012in).
Seems it depends on what Haynes manual you read! Mine says 0.3mm (0.012in) for all except 12A engines (which are 0.27mm to 0.33mm).

You might find what guru Keith Calver has to say interesting:

:ermm:thank you for the information

I have the blue haynes 69 to 91, and in the page 287 says Valve timing (engine prefixes 99HD80, 99HD92 and 99HC20) -valve clearance 0.53mm

And I have a 99HD80, what I don't want is to hit a valve or a valve gets stuck open

If that is not right, why they write that there? :)

Many thanks

Pd: my head is unleaded

Yep, my Haynes is the 69 to 01 edition and states that the figure given (0.3mm) is for all 99H models.

So far as I know, 12 thou is safe for all A series and A+ engines with standard cams whether leaded or unleaded. This is the figure I grew up with.

As to where the 0.53mm came from, I can only assume the '5' is a typo!

Cheers

I set mine to 12 thou after I fitted my 1.5.1 rockers + new head gasket and it runs fine (well it did at the time)

I have just checked, and it does say that. However this is in the supplementary section, look in section 1 - engine, valve clearance is states as 12 thou.

P.s. 0.20 inches is 200 thou, not 20 thou. With 200 thou valve clearance you be lucky to even get a valve open, hahaha
