Hello

I have a 91 Cooper that I love but it has come to the time to strip him down and get all the work required done. For the panels I need ive decided to go for genuine panels so it seems like vie not cut corners.

I've been quoted best parts of £1200 for panels and a local really well known bloke has told me £2000 for the work I feel confident he'll do a good job as I've seen his work and he does alot of work for the fords owners club and has been involved in a lot of concours winners.

I bought the car for £1000 and spent £700 on some work to be done that I now know is over priced but at the time was new to the mini scene so here my maths goes

Car - £1000
Work done - £700
Panels - £1200
Respray and panels fitted - £2000
Total - £4900

Will my car be worth this when done. I plan on keeping it standard Cooper with standard spec.

Hope someone can help

Regards
Scott

Hi Scott

Just done all this to my '96 Cooper. As to worth...probably not but who does all that work just for financial gain? You could save a fortune on the panels if you became a TMF+ member and got the available discounts...it's only £5 to join and on your reckoning of the panel costs, you should save £180.

minis are money pits, just like any car :D

you will very rarely make any money on a car not just a mini, you do it because you love the car not for money, if you want to make money buy a house and rent it out.

Your advice is bang on the money. I love the car so it's going have to be done.

You won't be too far out if it's to a concourse standard.

Completely perfect, original spec Minis can easily fetch £4000.

personally i enjoy building minis, but i also enjoy making a profit from them, i think id be what you call a (property) mini developer, i buy run down minis, enjoy the build up and finish, enjoy it a little while and then pass it onto others as another mini saved, another kept on the road! the more work you can do yourself, the more you save, instead of paying someone £2000 to weld and paint your mini, why not invest in some equiptment and have a go yourself, i built my last mini for less than i sold it for, i enjoyed driving and owning it the 2 1/2 - 3 years i had it, and enjoying some of the profit it made, by treatin my daughter and missus to a holiday, some new toys for littlen etc the rest of the money will be going on another project, again, built to within a budget, then sold on for profit, have a go yourself, save a few quid n make a few quid! :D

you don't buy a mini to make money on it

use it and enjoy it you can't put a price on that

i do, but i also have the pleasure of owning and driving them everyday, making a profit is a bonus when it comes to selling up and starting a new project, means you have a little more to spend on the next one, plus you can afford a few luxuries and treats! ;)
