Hi guys i have a 93 sprite 1275 and i am having problems with the fuel gauge, mainly it reads empty but somtimes registers fuel briefly then drops back to empty again, i have shorted out the two connectors to the fuel tank using the paper clip method and the clock shows full when this is done so im sure the fuel gauge its self is ok.

Can anyone suggest a possible cause for this? Im thinking possible dodgy wiring connection somewhere as it does ocasionaly give a reading or could it be the fuel sender in the tank?

Any help on this would be great as im not enjoying driving the car not knowing when i could run out of juice. I have only recently purchased the car and dont know roughly how many miles i should be getting out of it yet. The car is in standard form at the mo so no mods.

Also what colours are the wires that run through the car to the fuel gauge and where are they routed to?

Many thanks
Steve

you shorted out the two wires in the boot and got a full reading? if so then the wiring is fine, you just need a new fuel sender unit! Quite common problem, the copper coil that provides the reading is damaged so it only shows a reading when the break in it is bridged.
not expensive to fix but make sure you have less than half a tank of fuel or you will fill your boot with petrol when you swap the units!
