i would have thought you could go off the slam panel with them... i THINK i have a standard latch somewhere at home if you want it?

You do it however you want.
They're practical styling pretty much.
But yes, mine are on the slam panel.

is it safe to not have to hook and spring with just straps at the front...

so do i bolt it to the slam panel, then stretch it up to the bonnet and bolt?

There are some pics on my website myminis.co.uk Mine are mounted to the slam panel and onto the front of the bonnet. The only problem I had was air getting under the bonnet and lifting it at speed

I'll get some pics of mine tomorrow for you.
I just drilled into the slam panel and secured on the strap (mine has three nuts and bolts per strap) then closed the bonnet, stretched up the strap and marked out where to drill.

The tricky part, however, is getting it tight. You need enough slack to be able to undo the strap but that makes the bonnet wobble and come up.
But, because you have pins at the back, you could always just tighten the straps as tight as they will go so the bonnet barely moves and then to remove it, undo your pins and flip it forward. (if you see what I'm saying)

Not having the spring and latch isn't the end of the world.

The only problem is the leather on the straps stretch and shrink with moisture and as DaveVader says you have to leave a little slack to allow it to be buckled up.

C'mon, if you have to ask, then you know it's not safe. Can you tighten your straps? My straps have a few holes so I measured and drilled them with a few spare to tighten them down rock solid.
