Model:Mini 998cc Special
Year: 1991
So this is my first post on here as i recently just became a mini owner again (after 9 mini free years :P ). This seems like a great resource.
Ok, so i was driving home last night and i hit one of my towns fairly substantial pot holes with the passenger side front wheel, it made quite a bang so must have been pretty deep. A few yards down the road i hear a jangle tinkle jingle noise coming from the front of the car.
I think oh well it must be an exhaust bracket or something, it sounded like something thin and metal being dragged along the Tarmac under the front of the car. So i pull over to take a sneeky and i can't see any thing of the sort. No braket hanging down, no wire taping the exhuast ( I had this before on another mini where the main power was melted to the exhaust and would tap ).
I have checked all around the arch and i cant see anything hanging on the wheel and have pretty much ruled out this as a problem. So i guess it is something more serious.

The noise doesn't seem to kick in until i'm going 20 + miles an hour and if i hit bumps in the road it makes a clang noise from the wheel ( like a scaffold pole being hit with a spanner) and it makes the kinda dragging metal sound randomly with the contours of the road. It is not a typical bearing noise or suppension knock but i guess it could be either of these. The lock on the steering doesn't make it worse and it doesn't get louder with speed. Very strange.
The wheel bearing does have play in it but the noise is not a typical wheel bearing noise as it isn't wirring it is jangling....
Hope that makes sense and someone can help ........

Disc Brakes on your car?

Find the disc brake dust shield, will be engine side of the discs, and give it a tap with something, if it recreates the jangle it's usually the mounting brackets on these have rusted off.

With the wheels off it's a 5 min job each side to replace, they use the caliper retaining bolts and the cover splits in two for ease of replacement/fitting.

If no disc brakes on your car?

Pass... sorry.

Sounds like its the stone guard things for the brake discs. You can get replacements from minispares, but to be honest you would be better off taking them both off like most other people do.

Third vote for the disc shields. They really give a metallic clatter/clang when the brackets crack. Take them off both sides and bin them, unnecessary weight :P

It'd be best if you took the other side off as well. The more well balanced you can keep your brakes the better :P
