hi,
my car needs a new cluctch and i know that as a problem,
however i have found something that i believe is a broken/ warn part

when i go to use my clutch there is a period of travel that had nothing to do with the function of the clutch its like before the cylinder etc is used

looking under my steering column there is a little pin thing that i think is the problem
ive drawn a simple drawing on paint to try and help,
the arrow points to where i think it is worn

can anyone understand what i mean?
many thanks

Lawrence

There should be a clevis pin secured in place with a split pin. Is it missing?

Mine was missing on the first Mini I ever bought and it took me a while to work out what was wrong. I didn't have a new pin to hand so just used a nut and bolt.

The pin just joins the clutch pedal to the bottom of the master cylinder.

There are 3 clutch clevis pins, one is where you describe and the other two go through the clutch arm itself.
All those pins are subject to wear and it's a good idea to change them all if you have free travel in the clutch mechanism. Make sure you grease each pin with ordinary grease and that the split pins are correctly installed.
The pin from clutch pedal arm to master cylinder rod is especially hard to install and you need some long-nose pliars. As an alternative to a split pin there you can use a correctly-sized 'R-Pin' to help with installation.

Part numbers are:

CLZ512 - Clevis Pin, Pedal to master cylinder
CLZ518 - Clevis Pin, Clutch Lever to push rod
CLZ628 - Clevis Pin, Clutch Lever to case

With the last item it's easiest to fit it with the head underneath to get easy access to the split pin hole.

I hope this helps.
