Hi, I currently have a 1985 Mini City E with stage 1 kit fitted and am now feeling the hunger for more power. Unfortunately, I am on a very tight budget and do not have a lot of money to play with. I've looked into getting a new cylinder head, but these seem expensive and I would have to save to afford one. 1.5:1 roller tip rockers have also taken my fancy claiming to up power, but I have seen mixed reviews on these, especially when fitted to 998 engines. Also, would 1.5:1 be the correct ratio to go for?

Any advice on where I should go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,
Matt

im in the same situation and ive gone for a 12G295 head (fleabay jobby) a nikki carb (or similar, depends what you want) you've got the exhaust from stage 1. As far i was aware the standard rockers were best for the 998, and you can chage the cam if you want to take the engine out.
Id like to hear anymore ideas for me too.

Thanks for the reply, did the 12G295 head make a noticeable difference? Also, did it need reconditioning, as that is what seems to cost the money? I have heard a lot of people recommend a new cam, but am not keen on taking the engine out as I need the car as my daily drive!

Thats a question i cant answer as mines a project and im still doing the bodywork before i start on the engine. Ive just been collecting bits as and when i find them!
The head i got just needs skimming and maybe new seats to run on unleaded. I think it can be quite expensive to get done but i bet its not as much as a new head, and from what i researched this was the sought after head for the 998.

A 295 head is the way to go. Then a camshaft would be next. I got an MG cam foe £15 and that combined with the head gave 55bhp.

You will need new cam followers if fittting a cam, but they are cheap.

A 12 G 940 head is MUCH BETTER - and much cheaper than the 295. And don't waste money on daft high lift rockers. Chase up an MG Metro cam if you can - and yes - it can easily be fitted to a 998 engine in the car.

i was under the impression the only way to fit a cam with it in the car is to cut a hole in the inner wing and slide it in, other than that i thought it was an engine out job.

Yes of course - takes about 1 minute to cut the hole! Much easier than taking the engine out........ If really bothered - can make it a replaceable 'patch' held on with a few self tappers.

How do you deal with the cam followers? if you just slide the cam out, providing it doesnt get caught on a follower its self?

Its ok just realised you are dealing with a 998!! tappet chest covers :))

That's the BIG advantage of the 848/997/998/1098 (and Cooper S) engines!

I could see using roller rockers....if they are of the 1.3 variety however.
Keep in mind a 12g295 Cooper head would need to be milled/shaved to reach the proper chamber capacity. You can't just take a 295 and plonk it on...well you could, but I imagine your compression would be like 7.1 or so

Actually, just slapped straight on a 998 with flat tops you gey around 9.3:1 CR, great for a turbo, ok for NA, but better to skim it and get 10:1.
