Hope someone can help. My 1996 MPI cooper radiator fan seems to come on before the engine is up to temperature and then stays on until the engine is switched off. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this? Also the car seems to be idling less smoothly than usual.....not sure if this is linked?

Very best......Pete.

I had the same problem, the ground wire to the electric fan was grounding itself on lower part of the grill. I just put electric tape on it and it doesn't come on anymore.

Could also be a faulty temp sender unit (usually located in the front bottom corner of the radiator, but check as MPI models may be different) or if you have only recently bought the car check the sender unit wiring, to make sure it hasn't been intentionally bypassed manually by a previous owner. This is quite common to make the fan stay on permanently to help with over heating issues.

Please see Rover attached technical bulletin regarding constant cooling fan. Try a new temperature sender first (Around £15), then buy the loom (£40). Wiring loom is available still from minispares etc.

Try this one first as I had the very same problem about 3 months ago on my MPI and I seem to have fixed it for free. I disconnect the connector from the
coolant temperature sensor and I gave both the sensor and the connector a generous squirt of WD40, sorted.

i agree with that. It cured the problem for me and that was nearly two years ago. Cheap too.

Hi all,

I had the same problem with my mini that i have just bought. I am glad somebody else had this problem as i thought it was strange but normal :)

Anyway after investigating i found that the Rover mod had been carried out but the wiring connection was "******* poor" and one of the wires was disconnected - so just a quick reconnection and some heat shrink installed and hey presto no more problems

Hope you got yours fixed

Jay
