Hi,

The flexible pipe on the jet link arm going between float chamber and carb came off (carb side) the other month, helpful RAC man sorted it and got me going again. It happened again last week (just as I pulled out to overtake....) - luckily I could pull over safely and get to the loose end and shove it back in so got where I was going. However, I'm rallying next weekend so thought I better fix it properly. I've ordered what I thought was the correct part from Minispares (got both sides just incase). I've just had a look now and it seems that my carbs (according to Haynes) have Capstat type jet assemblies - and the replacement parts are non-capstat - are these interchangable, or do I need to get capstat type replacements?

Thanks in advance, and if anyone can suggest an easier way to get those two back nuts off to remove the carbs that would be a big help too. Other than employing a small child with tiny hands.

Cheers

Joe

Simple answer is no you will need to have the jet swapped for the correct one.. There is a kit to convert from one to the other, but in your case it will be simpler to just get the right jet.

IIRC, the choke link is different between the two jets. The Waxstat has ball fitting with a clip and the original is a flat link with a self tapper into the plastic jet.

Or just chuck the stat and throw in a few pennies.

That won't work in this case. He's got a broken waxstat jet and the new jet sent is the non waxstat.

and the replacement parts are non-capstat - are these interchangable, or do I need to get capstat type replacements?

For a while Calver was selling a conversion kit on his web site (an adapter bracket to allow an early "solid" jet to be used on a WaxStat carb). I haven't seen them on his site in a while. You CAN replace the tube on an early type jet, I don't believe that is possible on a WaxStat.

As a quick fix you do have an option. Go to your local parts store and ask them for some small inside diameter fuel line (low pressure, not fuel injection). You need something with an inside between 4mm and 5mm. Pull the plastic tube OUT of the WaxStat carb, push the small bore fuel line over the nipple on the jet body, and finally wire it securely in place using safety wire twisted tightly as a hose clamp. Cut the other end of the hose to length, minus a bit for the nut on the bowl end of the old tube. Remove the spring from the plastic tubing on the old tube, then slip the plastic tube inside the fuel hose and again, safety wire it in place... twisting the safety wire tightly to form a hose clamp.

The hose between the bowl and jet is not under any more pressure than the depth of the fuel in the bowl... maybe 2inches of gas. All that is important is that you have a secure seal between the jet and rubber tube and you'll be good until you can source the jet conversion kit.
