Hi,

I need to get a new torque wrench, has anyone got any suggestions as to what is the best to buy. I have allso seen angular torque gauges "to be used with torque wrenches" , does anyone know what they are for?

Some cars have fittings which need to be torqued up, then taken a certain angle past the torque setting so thats what they're for I think.

I've got a teng tools torque wrench thats been really good so far. Was about £45 from screwfix.

The black Halfords Pro ones are very good and sensible money. They've been proven in a number of tests to be accurate and well calibrated and the largest one they do in the range is suitable for doing disk brake hub nuts, gearbox pinion nuts etc - ie the nuts on a Mini requireing the highest torques.

I am a big fan of Teng stuff and do own three of their torque wrenches. However I found on one (possibly two) that the scale was very difficult to use on the imperial units. I invested in the Halfords ones and don't regret it at all.

Angular tightening is supposed to be more accurate for the compression of things like head gaskets. Torque is also effected by the friction on the screw threads. By tightening angularly you a stretching the bolt by a fixed distance - so many angles x the pitch of the thread.

As Graeme says, get one will do the 150lbs needed for the front hubs.

I have a number of torque wrenches, either Britool and Halfords... I recently replaced my Britool ones for gearbox building with the complete set of Halfords ones and I'm very impressed with their build quality and ease of use.. Also they come with the all important calibration certificate.
