So believe it or not, the PS3 has an inherent fault nearly exactly the same as that of the Xbox 360's RROD.

It is caused by the internal fan not providing sufficient cooling capacity to the circuitry, and as such, the heat sinks fail causing the solder holding components to the circuit board to melt. As a result, the components fail due to poor connection and the PS3/Xbox is rendered useless.

There are 3 solutions to the problem
1) If the console is still withing the manufacturers 1 year warranty, it can be returned to the place of sale or the manufacturer can be contacted directly for the console to be replaced without question free of charge (obviously after its been inspected etc etc).

2) If the console is out of warranty (like mine), Sony can be contacted directly for a refurbishment/rebuild service where the problem is fixed. However, Sony charge £150 for such a service - i am unaware of any such service offered by Microsoft. They offer a door to door pick-up/delivery too which is a nice touch.

3) If the console is out of warranty, you can go on YouTube and follow a guide on how to fix the problem which will take you all of maybe 2 hours, resulting in (hopefully) a fully working PS3/Xbox. All you need is patience, nimble hands, screwdrivers, a heat gun, and some heat sink compound.

What i find annoying is that Microsoft and Sony can be allowed to manufacture products which have such well known defects. To make a comparison, its similar to the launch of the iPhone 4. Apple released it, and found out very soon that it had defects. They then offered to fix the problems free of charge to all its iPhone 4 customers - everyone was happy.

How on earth can these companies know that there are such problems and then be so bold as to charge such a huge fee - or any fee at all for a process which takes a single person two hours - less for a huge company who could employ the benefits of economies of scale and division of labour to speed up the process hugely.

How many people find their TV's going wrong after 2 years of average use. Well I'v never seen it happen. My old one was 10 before i decided to scrap it, but even then it worked perfectly well!!

For a product that costed me £400 odd when i was 17 (all the money i had in the world), i expect more of such world renown companies.

So anyway, heres my PS3 as of now - in 10 pieces. I just need to wait until tomorrow when i can go to Maplins and get some heat sink compound then i can finish the whole process.

Has anybody elses had this problem or find this whole situation absurd?

thats pretty bad :) i found when i fiddled with the settings on my ps3, shoved all the settings to the max, after a while of playing a game fans would speed up to a super speed and altho usualy rather quiet as they blow air they were making a right racket, gave it a google and once i read i turned the settings too high i turned it down and the loud fan hasnt been on since.

does make me wonder tho, if in my room which isnt a furnace i cant have settings maxed without having the loud fan on...whats the point in them in the 1st place?

Well that sounds alright. Iv got a mate with an xbobx who got turned down by microsoft when he asked them for help :)

Although that was because he had taken it apart trying to fix it himself, put it back together, still didnt work - but as the warranty sticker had been tampered with (even though it was out of warranty anyway) they just flat out said no.

yep xboxes are 1 year warranty with normal problems and 3yrs with RROD afaik. our elite has seen pretty constant use for years and has had one error (not a full 3 lights just a damaged laser unit) and was repaired fairly quikly, they even sent us updates with what was happening!

My son has a PS3 and never seems to be off it. I did get him a bar of fans which connect via a USB port. I hope this will help.

yellow light of death has been going around for ages. ive still got an original release ps3 and mine is (touch wood) still running perfect.

sony's £150 charge is just stupid but if you love your ps3 surely you would be willing to pay it, or even buy anouther second hand console. good luck with the repair on your ps3 i hope you get it back up and running but be warned its only a temp fix like wrapping your 360 in a towel, it will have a higher chance of failing again ^_^

to be honest im hoping sony jump on the microsoft band wagon and start rolling out 3 year YLOD fixes for there ps3 consoles.but like microsoft there new slim console's(ps3 and xblox) is ment to be YLOD/RROD proof so why are sony going to start wasting there own money to fix older gen consoles when there newer ones dont break.

What settings are we talking about? Any links to the sites you found on your google search? My fans get up quite a speed whilst playing COD for any length of time...

I've heard of this happening to alot of next-gen consoles.

Which is why I stick to my Megadrive or SNES :(
