Hi, my mini 1984 mini city has recently had front hi Los and a new cv joint boot fitted. My steering 2 days later has suddenly given way..... When I turn the steering wheel the wheels dont catch (but the steering kinda grinds, as though the column is rubbing on sonething )and then start turning once I've moved the wheel about 60 degrees.

So 3 questions , could the recent work have caused this?

Any idea what the fault is?

Anyone know a good garage in Kinross , I'm up here camping and don't know the area at all ! :)

Have you got a steering drop bracket fitted? - sounds as though the rack U bolts are not tight, so the rack is moving when you turn the steering wheel.

I do have a column drop bracket. I've localised the problem to this: by the brake pedal when you turn the steering wheel the clamp right by the floor moves along with that bit if column, what it's clamping onto does not move :)

Tightened clamp and makes no difference. I suspect your right pikey. Anyone got any garage recommendations for Kinross ?

easiest way might be to remove the column (just pull it up after loosening the clams and removing the lower clamp bolt) and see if there are any splines left on anything. It maybe "just" replace the inner column, but the smart money is still on the rack.
