if your going to tune it
an 850cc is better because it will rev more
and the 998 is a long stroke engine
all i really know from being told
but whats wrong with a 1275?
haha

it's not all about revs, long strokes have more tourqe! 997 is the long stroke engine anyway, not the 998
850s are a waste of time unless you want your 850 mini just how it was when it came out of the factory for some reason

I'd say stick with the 850 and tune it to be a little bit different :)

About 4 days, there is a difference of around 5 secs 0-60

Sorry to disagree, but the 850 won't really rev as the sensible crankshaft limit is quite low, say 6600. This, in turn, limits the available cam choice. There used to be a competition crank for the 850, but finding one these days is virtually impossible.
The 998 was always a better engine even thought the stroke is a bit longer because the crank is much stronger. You can rev an unbalanced 998 to around 7000 and tune it to give over 70 bhp and still have a useable engine. The limit for tuning a road-going 850 is probably around 50 to 55 bhp.
The only good reason for keeping to 850 is for originality and maintenance of value as a classic.
