Can anyone give me an idea of what sort of price i should expect to pay for a good used or recon/exchange clubman 1098cc engine with a manual gearbox, If any one has an engine and box to donate i am all ears.

I was hoping to be paying around £50-£100 pounds for a good engine and box (with all the bits carb, dizzy alternator etc) that could be dropped in and forgoten about other than the usual servicing etc,
I have been offered 998cc engine and boxes for as little as £20 from a running car so i dont realy want to pay through the nose.

exactly, but if joe muggins who's got one wants a ton fifty for it then you aint going to get it for 80...
What you have to appreciate is that 1098's are rarer than both 1275's and 998's
Do a search on ebay and see how many you find.......none most likely

To be honest the engine is for my brothers project (b reg mini 998), He is after a little more go without the expence of tuning (cams, carbs, exhaust, headwork etc) would like realy to exchange his existing 998 because it has just been decoked and had the valve stem seals replaced and is running sweet, and due to his age a 1275 would be a little to big for insurance purposes, If he could afford to insure it he would go for a 1275 metro turbo engine.

I got one for under £50 on ebay for my clubby estate. Third gear syncho is a bit dodgy but it runs ok. Are the 1098s desirable now?

Those 2 engines are for a morris minor - ie, in-line engines, where the crank end is different + and the holes drilled in the block are different
Ask Simon at Morspeed if you could buy a 1098 crank + pistons (they're about 7mm shorter than the 998 ones) off him
He told me before that he cant get a reliable source for decent pistons, so all 1098 stuff just tends to get thrown into a corner
Then just do a generic rebuild, using that crank+pistons

You'll probably find the insurance quote would be about the same for a 1098 as it will be classed as a modification as it's not standard so insurance will screw him anyway. 1098's are few and far between these days as they had a tendency of going bang !!and due to his age a 1275 would be a little to big for insurance purposes, If he could afford to insure it he would go for a 1275 metro turbo engine.
If his age is not on his side then he's probably best putting up with a 998 til the insurance becomes more bareable.

1098 is a MUCH better engine than 998 imo, they dont have to be revved so much to get anything out of them, my old mini had a 1098 which was very enjoyable to drive, unfortunatley it did go bang (blown head gasket) but it had covered about 150k so i would so it is probably no worse than any other a series engine, just dont rev it too hard because it doesnt need revs, it just pulls rally nice.
the replacement engine was a 998 and it was ok, but i miss that 1098
sermon over

also, 1098's cant really be revved beyond 6k, unless you do major lightening+balancing
I really wouldn't want to be revving a 1098 too hard :saywhat:
