Model: Austin Mini 1000
Year: 1979
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible): Choke cable has come loose. It still works but it's come away along with the fascia.

I'm a complete and utter noob when it comes to do with anything regarding fixing anything and I'd just like to try and do it with some advice first. How do I go about removing/re-fitting the fascia and tightening the choke cable?

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem? None.

A picamature.

Hi Cheddars!

You've got two issues going on there.

The first is that the nut on the back of the cable has come loose allowing it to start coming through the panel!

The second is that there is an "L" shaped bracket that is held to the switch panel by the nut holding the choke cable outer sleeve on.
This has come loose at the outer cable end and also where it bolts to the lower dash rail.
If you crawl into the footwell and look back towards the rear of the car you should see a little nut/washer which holds the bracket to the lower dash rail. That need tightening, but do your outer cable nut first!

Hope that makes sense??!!

Steve.

its very fiddley i replaced the fascia with a red one

i had to unscrew 3 screws from the heater ( 2 screws are screwed in2 the lower dash rail) so it drops down and or u might have to unscrew the bolts behind the car/screen/off things be4 u can lower the heater, u can get 2 them but its really annoying lol

so the heater drops down, if u put ur hand up behind the fascia u should feel a nut 1 on each side they would need to be unscrewed (its tricky) once they are unscrewed u should be able 2 move the fascia out a bit then there should be a nut behind the fascia for the choke cable and u should be able 2 tighten it

now getting the fascia bk on is again tricky u have to line up the things that holds the fascia in place with the holes and get the nut bk on (really tricky cause u cant see what ur doin, u hav 2 use the force) i used a bit of masting tape on the socket so the nut wouldnt fall out as easy then screw every up.

now its really fiddly and annoying doing this it took me more than 4 hours just 2 change the fascia

hope this makes some sence to u, also if u havnt id recommend getting a hayens manual it is very very helpful

good lucky with it

Cheers for the replies, chaps.

This made me laugh!

I've sort of temporarily fixed the choke cable issue for now. Unscrewed the two screws at the front under the switch panel to drop the heater (note, not literally DROP!) so I could gain limited access to the cable. Once I worked out what was what after a bit of touchy feely I got the nut and washer into place. Held the nut still tightly with my finger and twisted the choke knob to tighten it. Then twisted the knob anti-clockwise a tad just to get the 'Choke' marking level.

That will do until I can do it properly.

I have the tightness of the choke knob holding the fascia in place for now.

I do have the Haynes 69-01 manual and was using that as I had no replies by the time I decided to start it.

Blimmin' heater was a bugger to screw back in! It doesn't look straight and level either. Kinda facing towards the passenger side slightly.
