Overhauled the clutch master cylinder.

Painted it up so it would look nice.

Within a few days it looked like this:-

Aaaaaaaaaaaah!! I did try not filling the cylinder to the top so this wouldn't happen.

Is there a better paint? It was plastikote - although I guess any paint would have done the same. Is the cap supposed to have a seal?

Cheers

It was well cleaned and degreased etc.

I'm thinking that the fluid sloshed around and leaked out of the cap?

thats gutting dude!
how long did you leave the paint to cure before filling?
perhaps a coat of petrol resistant lacquer would give it a bit more protection.

Must have been a least a week before I fitted it to the car and probably another before I got round to fitting everything else and finally putting fluid in.

Petrol resistant lacquer - isn't the same as normal lacquer used over a base coat on a car? In which case I bet brake fluid will still strip it off in no time!!

Perhaps I'll have to get some of that super expensive new brake fluid that don't strip paint I read about somewhere?

Would powder coating be any better - does brake fluid fetch powder coating off??

Cheers

petrol resistant lacquer is tougher than normal clear coat, you can get it in halfords though. think they use it quite a lot of motorbike petrol tanks.

Why not leave the sides painted and try just polishing the top part? They do come up quite shinny.

If you mean the silicone stuff, dont go mixing it with what you have. It should really only be used with an all new system

No paint is impervious to brake fluid - even petrol resistant stuff

lmao. You have no chance painting that. Brake fluid eats into the metal, I imagine that a fair amount has splilled over that reservoir over the years and most likely pools of it have sat on top of it for some time. If you keep trying your only waisting paint the only effective treatment is to chrome it. But that said with the contamination already in the metal I dont know it it would take.

Rob.
