About 4 mths ago I did some mods on corsa turbo for a customer a painted it Honda nighthawk black. In normal light it lokked just a normal flat black, but when sun light hits its you see an array of pearls including reds, blues and greens. Very nice indeed.

I agree matt finishes always look unfinished. Have you thought about a paint effect called Xposures from chromepaint.com ?
It starts of as black and changes colour as heat hits it i.e. the sun, your hand and heat from the engine etc.
I’m sure that this is going to replace the now old flip paints.
Only down side is it will cost you £1,3400 for the complete kit to paint your mini.
Your then properly looking at £1,000 for a body shop prep and paint it for you.

im quite lucky as i have a brother in the trade so he will be doing the prep and also the spraying for me at his work so the costs are significantly reduced all i have to pay for is the materials and paint

Theirs some many other different effects on the market now a days like retro glows and crinkles etc. I do a lot of custom paintwork for people and over the last 6 years i've only done one metal flake, but saying that i am doing a mini van for colin at north west minis in a fews weeks which will be black with silver metal flake.
You'll be able to see it at the indoor show in january.
