hi guys, i have had a small bump in my mini, and i have now got that sorted, only damage was the lights bumber and grill, no damage was done to the engine, that we could see, the dizzy cap wasnt cracked or anything, the exhaust wasnt blowing and the engine sounded nice, so we assumed that it was ok, and so i have been driving it trouble free for the last 2 days, however, i now feel we were wrong, as i have just been for a drive, and got 300m from home and smelt a burning smell, anyway, when i got it back, lifted the bonnet and smoke is coming out of the rocker rover vent on the cap, and from between the gasket, the engine still runs but has a bit of a miss fire when you touch the throttle, the engine has done near enough 100k, and i was going to rebuild it once i finished work for the summer, so i am fearing the worst here, i have read a thread about leaking gastket, but this i have counted out as the smoke is inside the rocker cover! there is oil in there, if not a little too much, and the rocerk cover and surrounding area is very hot! so what else should i be looking for when it cools down enough?

Smoke Coming From Rocker Cover

Is there water in the rad?
Sounds like a head gasket to me due to the misfiring

the water in the rad vanished when i opened the rad cap, we thought at this point head gasket, filled it with water, started it up and with in seconds it had presureised, again we thought head gasket but then my dad thought it could be the thermostat, so we took that out as it was a lot less work than taking the head off, and worth checking before we did take the head of, and sure enough it was siezed!
thanks for your advice paul! much apprechiated chap!

Hopefully thats it then. Does it still misfire? Check the ignition thoroughly, if all is OK it could still be head gasket.

Did the tree jump out in front of you or were you looking at something more interesting in your footwell??
Do a compression test to check if its the head gasket/valve stem seals/valves/top end/piston rings/holey piston/fairy's smoking cigars/hell inside you cylinders.
Are your crank case breathers blocked?
Its well due a rebuild on the top end and the bottom end wont have much more life in it.....
Thats my words for what they are worth.

nope it doesnt missfire still, but it did over heat again on the way to the workshop, but the water stayed in the rad this time! we think that it might have been caused by an air lock in the water system, as the oil was really clean and the engine does still sound nice! were going to do a compression test when we can just to make sure the head is ok, but once we flushed the water system and took it for another run it went well and didnt over heat, but as i said were going to do a test just to make sure!
yeah it is well due a rebuild, i was going to take it off the road in september and do a rebuild on it, few mods, get a bit more out the engine and try and learn something, it wont be like your 30 wilson but ill give it a go!
