Hi everyone, i know straight cut drop/transfer gears have been frequently talked about on here but i am in need of some help and guidance. I have heard there are different ratios of the gears which can alter the final drive ratio, like 22/22, 23/23 and 24/24 etc etc with different combination to be had. I don't know what my final drive is but i have very good acceleration on my 1275, so i would ideally like to keep the final drive the same and need to know which combination of gears to choose. I have also heard that 24/24 gears around the idler give a quiet whine and 22/22 would be the loudest, is this true?

So i would like the gears to be as loud as possible so they can be heard outside the car when i am driving but still retain my final drive ratio. I was hoping to go for the Minispares drop gears, has anyone had experience with these gears?

I know i'm going on a bit here, but can the gears be fitted without totally removing the engine, i know access would be very limited to remove the clutch housing etc and to get to shim the gears.

Many thanks, Evan.

mine are standard ratio, not sure what that is, but there loud, as a few others know, lol, i get heads turning in the street, as if to say what the ******* is that, lol. Minimadcraig made a comment on how loud they are in the mini in the park thread, lol, people often say to me its got a nice whine.

Sounds like what i'm after, i heard your car at Brooklands i think and it sounded great. Did you get your gears from Minispares as they only seem to sell the gears seperately rather than a kit?

I think i remember you saying that they could be fitted when i poped over a while back to have a listen to your s/c drops.

Thanks i'll check them out later on. I have heard Minisport gears are to be avoided because of the quality?

Yeah 100% can fit em with the engine in. It's a PITA but do-able. I've done it twice now.

Did you unbolt the engine mount from the clutch housing and jack one side of the engine up?

1:1 is usually standard unless you have different drops i.e the economy drops but very unlikely, To change the ratio you would have to change the primary to say a 23tooth which would give you somewhere near 1.04:1, which would increase your FD ratio, so ideal for the track when you have to change the ratio. Im not sure if the noise will change on what ratio drops you choose, but i doubt it, it will still be loud enough to hear. I had just a SC/CR gear-set in my 998 and you could still hear them espically in 1st gear and there submerged in oil all the time so drop gears will be even louder than the gearset. I have just brought the Evo drops from MiniSpares a couple weeks ago and as you said you need to buy them individualy to get the correct ratio you want.

Pete.

We could kit them, but we'd confuse the life out of everyone with too many part numbers. Individual parts mean you can easily select what you need

Racer_Pete: Have you got the engine with the evo drops installed in your car yet as it would be great to know how they sound. If you don't mind me asking how much did they cost as i couldn't see to many evo gears?

[email protected]: Which gears would you recommend (which ratios for a 1275, A+ series i think)?

Im currently building that engine at the mo, but have a look on youtube, just type mini 1380 or similar in and i'm sure loads will come up with s/c drops fitted. I think mine came to around £200ish with discount.

Any straight cut drops are going to be loud, but obviously some tooth counts are going to be louder than others. If you are happy with your final drive, stick at 1:1
