Hi all.

I know this comes up a lot but I really need to know if there was a year the rulings were brought in for fog lights, and hence if they don't apply to my Viva.

I'm wiring in my lights exactly as it says in the Haynes manual and the Vauxhall documents.

I did this today and the set up means that the rear fog light is only dependant on the ignition being on. I.e. the headlights can be off and the R. fog light will still be on if ignition switch and R. fog light switch is on.

The front ones I haven't finished yet so can't be 100% sure but I think these may be dependant on the headlights being on, will do some tests with the multimeter tomorrow. However it would still be good to know the rules on this for a 1975 car if anyone knows.

Thank you for the help,
Oli

I have a 1977 car and it doesn't need a fog light, it does have the mk2 type rear lights as these were on it when i aquired it 4 years ago.

Rear fog light only became compulsory in 1980. The main thing is that it has a warning light so you know when it's on.

I know these parts aren't needed, but I'm adding them at the moment and following the proper diagrams to the T!

They've got tell tales as I'm using Mini switches so they're on the switch. Just wondered if the rear fog needs to turn off when the headlights turn off and same for the front ones on a 1975 car. Really don't want to go through all this effort to have to rip it all out and start again come MOT time.

IF it has a foglight fitted it has to work. If none fitted. No problem.

This applies to hazard flashers but not to rear fog lights. Rear fog lights fitted to vehicles first used before 1st April 1980 are not tested

Thanks guys, we're kinda getting there. I suppose if the rear fog isn't tested, it doesn't matter how it's wired in.

But I'm still looking for this bit, just incase.

Specifically, with regards to a car of 1975 vintage:

Do the front fog lights NEED to turn off when the headlights turn off?

I know they do on newer cars, but what about on one from 1975, do the same rules still apply?

Found the motuk website (link here!), Foglight blab is right at the bottom

Note: A rear fog lamp is permitted to operate independently of headlamp, position lamp or ignition systems.

I'm sure there's a bit that says you can drive on fogs & sides only, provided the fogs are in the right place.

Although your rear fog will not be tested at MOT , if fitted it must comply with construction and use regulations which state it must be fitted with a tell tale. I cannot see any regulations regarding the electrical connection of front fog lights. Have a look yourself
