A coil is a 12v to 30,000v electrical tranformer. They get hot, this is not unusual. If it's getting to the point where you can't touch it, there may be something wrong though. Is it the right coil for the car? Is it connected properly?

12v is likely to be the wrong coil for this car, '84 was the introduction of ballasted ignition. What colour is the coil wiring?

It could be the coil but it could equally be anything downstream of the coil. Have a look at the points and condenser first.

If you have a meter you could check the dwell angle, as well as the resistance of the coil's windings.

New bits are prone to failure just like old ones, especially stuff without moving parts to wear.

Have you got a meter, or at least a test light? Turn the engine to open the points and check that there's no current flowing by putting your tester in the wire between the dizzy & coil.

I wouldn't trust your new points and condensor. easy enough to change and see what happens. Had exactly the same on an old MG, dodgy condensor was the cause.

Dan asked earlier what the color codes on the coil wires were. You said a Mini specialist said the coil was right, but please post the wire color codes and any part numbers you can identify on the coil.
