Your best bet is to remove the tank, its better to be safe than sorry.

You could remove the filler neck, but then you've still got the tank nearby, venting fumes to atmosphere. Deffo safer to remove the tank.

Would also say remove the tank to be safe. Its the fumes that blow up not the fuel.I would bash the panel in weld a plate grind then fill for a no see repair.

the thing that annoys me is that that the repair panel is readily available and only costs £15 but instead this was done to it

looks like it will be taking the tank out at some point then as i feared

Best to be safe. You could hammer that one in skim with Fibre Glass P40 to seal and stop filler cracks then fill with P38 and spray. :)

i prefer to weld in a new panel as the filler cap has to go there and the panel that has been fitted is not a good fit for the correct ford locking fuel cap

I agree would be great with the correct Panel fitted and then the Cap will fit.A good weld job is the best if you are happy and keeping car some time.At the price you said for the part its worth doing a good job it will look nice.Bet you get a few take the micky out of the plate.

Ive helped to the repair your doing with a mate of mine what we did was

Remove The Fuel Filler Neck and then took the tank out and put it at the far end of the garage empty

put duck tape over the end of the fuel line after we have shot some air down it to clean all the petrol out

then left the car out side to venterlate all the fumes away for about 2 days (we had college why so long but a day is good)

then welded it back up and everything went back in a treat just to a while to get fuel back down the lines
