Just a quick question on indicator tell tale lights on the dashboard.
Basically i am planning to put a custom dash in my 1982 mini and was wondering if i go for the centre clock with an oil pressure and water temp dual gauge and an oil pressure gauge do i need to have tell tale lights for the indicators too. The classic style centre clocks do not come with these as im sure you are aware however im just wondering if they are a requirement for the car to pass an mot. I seem to remember hearing that if they are in the car then they have to work but if they are not it will still pass.
Any information i could get would be most apreciated.

Cheers guys and gals x...

The centre clock does have an indicator tell tale. just wire up the existing tell tale feeds to each side of it, they act as an earth for each other.

Just a bit of info needed.
Ive got a 1982 mini and am giving it an interior overhaul. In doing this i am going to fit a new dash board and the clocks i want are as follows: speedo ( the centre clock version which i believe is bigger ) oil pressure and water temp dual gauge and a water temperature gauge. The problem i have is that the style speedo i am after has no tell tale lights for the indicators. I am sure i have heard somewhere that it is not an mot requirement to have them in the car only that if they are fitted that they have to work. In short can i fit the speedo and forget about the tell tale lights on the dash as i am going to get the whole car rewired.
Oh a cheeky question too has anyone had thier mini rewired and how much did it cost??????
Any help on this matter would be most apreciated
Cheers guys an gals Deano x.

Indicator tell tales are required on any car where you cannot see at least one external indicator lamp on each side from the driver's seat. So no, you can't do without them in a Mini. Having said that, a tell tale can be auditory rather than visual. I don't think the click of the flasher unit counts, especially if the car has an electronic flasher, but there are various indicator beepers available as used on bikes or scooters.

That whole MOT 'if it's fitted it must be working but otherwise isn't needed' garbage that everyone gets told by their mates when they first buy a car is complete nonsense. It only applies to hazard light systems that have been retro fitted to cars that weren't made with them. Things are either testable or not at the MOT, there are no grey areas.

Topics merged.

As Ethel says, if it's the proper center clock you are talking about (not clear from your second thread) then they do have a tell tale and always had. It's been a requirement for ages.

Mk1 centre clocks don't have a tell-tale for the indicators as it was in the end of the stalk.

If you have one of these then the fuel gauge is highly unlikely to work as the Mk1 system is completely different to the later cars - have a search for posts by DKLawson for more info - he has posted a lot on this subject,

Thanks for the info mate im planning to give the car a full interior and engine overhaul when i get home so im pricing things up and looking into it whilst im still away. I was planning to get the dashboard and dials etc and then pay to get the car rewired as electrics are not really my bag. Then i was going to recon the engine myself before putting the car in for the mot.
do you have any idea how much i am looking at to get someone to rewire the car?

As i am gettin a custom dash I will get seperate tell tales fitted as this now seems the simplest of solutions. Also cheers for the advice about mk1 centre clocks i will try to steer clear of one of those :))
