From September 2010 it seems like it won't only be pre-1972 classic Mini's that are road tax exempt!

Quote:
MINI has revealed a refreshed model line-up that includes a new diesel engine which promises to dip the already ultra-popular supermini below the road tax threshold.
The brand is ditching its current oil-burner and replacing it with a BMW-built 1.6-litre four cylinder engine that emits just 99g/km CO2, making the MINI One D and MINI Cooper D exempt from taxation in the current system.

Does anyone on TMF own both a tax-exempt classic Mini and a tax-exempt modern car as a daily driver yet?......... it seems several other new cars now also sneak below the 100g/km CO2 barrier and qualify for free road tax in this latest Auto-Express magazine group road test of tax free cars:

I'm surprised they had to use their own engine, the Fiesta Econetic uses the same DV6 engine as the BMW Mini D and managed to get tax free status.
