Hi There

I have a standard 998cc Mini 1000. Its a 1974 Mk3.

The other day i noticed that the milometer is only reading in the 1 mile and 10th of a mile collums. It is stuck at 37000 as none of the 3700 seem to be moving. As far as i can see the speedo itself is reading accurately although does become a little wavy below 35mph.

This is obviously a problem as one i dont know the genuin milage of the car and two i want to be able to tell the amount of miles i have done.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be?
I guess it's inter speedo not in the engine.

Thanks

GregH

The problem is inside the speedometer.

The cable drives a disk inside the speedometer and the disk uses inductive coupling to a drag cup to which the needle is connected. On that same input shaft is a worm gear that is the first step in the drive for the odometer. So... if the speedometer needle is working properly you know that the cable is turning.

There are pawls driven by the worm gear I mentioned earlier. Those pawls can wear out which stops the odometer from advancing. However, you reported that the 1/10ths and 1 mile counters were working. That implies a mechanical issue within the odometer gear assembly itself. Basically, there is a tiny gear on the "side" of each odometer wheel. As the wheel next to it completes one revolution, the side gear advances the wheel "on" numeral. After you've taken one apart this will make more sense.

Should you decide to investigate what's wrong with your odometer yourself, Google for: Repairing Jaeger and Smiths Speedometers
You will find a 27 page PDF by Anthony Rhodes that will walk you through how the odometer works and how to work on the inside of the gauges.

Thanky you very much for such an in depth reply. That has helped a huge amount.

Do you know if parts are fairly readily available?

Thanks

Sorry, I don't know about parts availability at all. You may wish to contact Speedy Cables and see if they have (and sell) parts.
