just wondered was it only japanese minis which had air conditioning or did standard english mpis have it as well thanks alot
The Mk7 (MPi) Mini was not produced for the Japanese market. One of the reasons for this was that there was insufficient room for air conditioning, which was standard for Japan. So all Japanese spec Minis has SPi engines. Any air con system for an MPi Minis would, therefore, be aftermarket and would have to fit in a VERY restricted space.

The way I have seen this resolved is with a reversed A/C compressor mount, where the compressor is mounted on the wing and faces opposite the motor.
Astro Air in the UK made the original MPI A/C kits but I can't find any contacts for them. I thought I heard Astro Air is defunct.
There's another company in the UK that made MPI A/C kit fitments, but I don't know what the ID of that company is (it isn't Astro Air.)
If anyone can ID either of these companies, I'd be ready to buy from them. Just getting the compressor/compressor mount would at least allow the rest of the system to be cobbled up in a relatively straightforward fashion (as far as A/C's go.) The condensor can be mounted in the RH wing, underneath the boot floor within the subframe, or both in series (as Astro Air did.)

The key is to get a compressor mount that will fit. On the JPN models, there is a compressor mount to fit the serpentine belt drive of the MPI (needing a longer belt) but a compressor mounted here (near the belt adjuster bolt) will foul the front mounted radiator of the MPI.

there is nothing to stop an mpi car running the sidways radiator. if the issue is just about mpi radiator and compressor, then surely that would solve the issue.
I asked about this as i may be taking the hornet overseas but so far this is the most informative thread on the issue.
