The selector forks take no part in holding the gearbox in gear - once it's IN gear. Seriously - if you paid someone good money to 'restore' this gearbox - they haven't done a good job. Let THEM take it out - fix it - and then put it back in the car.

So you think if they're not worn enough not to engage the gears at all, they're alright? There's no "halfway in"?

I do hope we won't have to take the engine out, too, although it would be done on warranty of course, but it's still a good week off the road. Not looking forward to that at all.

If it's not the engine moving about a lot, and it would have to be violent movement, then it's probably the detants.

detants.

Detent? Perhaps. :)

I had a metro turdo that kept jumping out of third as it hit boost. That was the top engine mount. The engine was being held in place by the Carb sitting on the bulk head. in the words of the Rover mechanic (the main dealer about 1/2 a mile from longbridge, up the Likey Road. "They all do that (snap)"

We'll look at the mounts and stuff on Sat. The engine certainly isn't moving violently. Even if it was, that would probably only happen on really harsh acceleration or braking. The gears already pop out when you go off the throttle though, and not abruptly, like when you roll up to a red light 200m ahead and don't want to stop, hoping for it to turn green by the time you roll there. I personally think it's the gears not engaging fully, for whatever reasons there may be, and there are a couple. But I'd love to be proven wrong on Sat by fitting a different dogbone, for example:)

I did say above - 'once it's IN gear' - then the selectors do nothing. If it doesn't go 'IN' properly - it will jump straight out as soon as you apply power! It will be worn dog teeth and or too much end float. I say again - if you paid to have it restored - take the car back to the person who did the work.

And who 'restored' the gearbox ?? Take it back to them and tell them to fix it!

Obviously, we are going to do that as a last resort. But you don't go transplant someone a new heart as a first measure after they faint once either, do you?

It's funny how you're so sure without even having seen the car:)

As it turned out, the solution was as simple as the reason was stupid:
The little rubber boot that sits on the selector rod was simply a bit too long and, when in 2nd or 4th, was compressed so hard, that it was hard to engage gears properly and the back pressure from the rubber boot simply knocked the gear out into neutral sometimes. Cut off 1cm off the boot and the gears are completely stable now. No engine out, no new parts and no sloppy work from the man who did the engine & gearbox. Just me trying to put in too many gaskets plus the boot.
