Hi Guys,
I have just fitted some new front door seal rubbers to my Mk2 shell and now the doors don't close! is this normal? I don't want to force it too much as it's just had a bare shell respray!. Any ideas very welcome please. The doors were a perfect fit before the rubbers were fitted.

Shall I heat the rubbers up or slam the door

Regards
Matt

it's normal. close the door (i assume it gets to the first latch position?) and then just lean on it a bit to fully close. If it still wont, then you may need to just tweak the hinges and mechanism out for now, let it settle for a week or 2, then adjust properly.

This happened when I fitted my new doors. Mine was quite bad and I couldn't shut the door at all really without putting my knee through the door skin trying. I had to bend the lip which the seal sits on inwards away from the door to give room for the seal.

If you take the seal off and sit inside, you'll should have about a 10mm gap all the way round between the door and the seal lip. On mine it was just the front edge of the seal lip which was too close. I got abit of sill edge trim to protect the lip, clamped mole grips onto it and bent it inwards bit by bit.

My car has also just been resprayed and with bending the lip, the paint around the bottom of the lip will crack, theres no way of avoiding it. You could try heating the lip to soften the paint before bending but I doubt it'll do much. I just repainted my lip with a brush afterwards, afterall its under the seal and a pretty hidden area anyway.

Thx Guys, that's great I'll go for leaving it closed on the first latch (as it does close onto this) for a while until the rubber flattens slightly...maybe undo the hinges slightly too...

If the door fits well in the cutout then leave the hinges alone. You could end up with the front edge of the door protruding past the A panel.
