With the power your looking for and the driveability your after, I would just buy a standard 1275 mg metro (these lumps have the uprated cam, and big valve head) Give it a rebuild, probably a rebore to 1293 or 1330, then get the head ported and polished, together with replacing bottom end bearings, oil pump etc etc. You will have a nice motor.
I love my 1310, it is a bit lumpy on idle with the Kent 276 cam in there, but I think thats more down to retarded ignition timing.
