i in the middle of trying to start an old engine. the fuel pump is pumping the fuel as normal but the fuel doesnt seem to be getting past the float valve in the carb. i poured some fuel directly down the air intake and it fired up right away so i know the electrics and timing are good.
so my question is, can you free a stuck float without taking the carb off?
Yeah you can remove the float by undoing the four screws under the carb, it's a bit of a mess on, and easier to see whats happening if you took the carb off, but it can be done in situ with a stubby screwdriver.
My HIF 44 float had the opposite problem, it was stuck open and pumping fuel out of the overflow. I removed the float as mentioned above and found that one of the rivets holding the float had corroded away, so the float wasn't sitting in the right place. Super glue formed a temporary repair (not really recommended, don't know what petrol does to super glue), then I got a new float from Mini Spares to permanently fix it. By the way, watch for the rubber O ring under the base of the carb when you take it off.
