Hi i am looking for the best way to recondition my subframes. Should i get them sand blasted and painted? or rub them down and paint them myself.
Which is best way to protect them but also get a nice finish.
If anyone has any photos of there subframes they have done please post them.
Thanks Liam

the best way would be to sandblast and then powdercoat. It's also the most expensive.
You can spend hours wire brushing them back to bare metal, which basically achieves the same as sandblasting, but obviously involves lot more work.
As for finish, I've gone at mine with hammerite (brush on) and then a spray coat to finish. It's not perfect though. I do think I went a bit thin on the layers of hammerite though as you can still see areas where the surface rust was. It's not as if it looks rubbish, but it isn't perfect (annoyingly!)
All in all though, it's down to cost.

I had mine sand blasted to remove the old paint and any surface rust, that cost me £35. I then brush painted it with hammerite undercoat and satin black top coat. While it was off i did cleaned (wire brush on an angle grinder) both radius arms, drums and back plates etc.

Get it sandblasted. dont powder coat it if its an everyday as it chips easily and lets whater and will rot your frame. best to paint it with hammerite or por 15

Thanks for your help. I think i will get it sand blasted and then paint it myself. Because powered coating doesnt sound like its going to be strong enough.
If anyone has any photos of there finish subframes please post would be good to see the different finishes.

I had mine blasted and powdercoated

I got a really good deal. Would have probably cost more to buy the wire brushes & paint.
Good luck

I had mine sandblasted (both for a total of 150 USD/98 GBP) Then I used a quart of POR 15 (had tons left) and this was my result. I feel this will hold up to the elements

i'm at the same point at the moment with my subframes there both pretty good so dont need too much cleaning up really. i've been looking at the POR15 stuff on the websites and not sure if i need to use the rust preventive paint first or just the chassis coat black top coat. could do with getting it ordered up.

Just use the rust preventing por15. The only reason you'd need to paint it with the top coat is if the part would be in contact with sunlight. Por15 fades in UV.
