Hello everyone,

I've just bought a mk2 bootlid for my mini.

My question is why does the numberplate holders hinge up?

What is the purpose of it?

It was done to allow the carriage of suitcases etc. With a large case (or three) in the boot, it wouldn't be possible to close the lid - so the numberplate swings down to allow it to be visible.
