just had all the ball joints, cv boot, radiator, and water pump replaced and booked her in for MOT on Monday. Thought I'd give her a wash, and when I started her up I noticed a loud ticking noise. Lifted the bonnet, and revved it up, and smoke was coming from behind the cylinder head. I switched off in case it was serious!
Any advice appreciated.

Very likely the manifold to head joint. Do you have an aftermarket exhaust manifold? They are often a different thickness to the inlet, making it difficult for the nut to clamp both. You might get away with retightening all the manifold studs, from the middle 'n working outwards or you might need a new gasket.

It won't do any harm to run it, just don't gas yourself!

ticking can be from the excaping gas' id replace the manifold gasket and try get hold of copper nuts as they dont sieze to the studs as much as normal studs.

Thankyou folks!
Took her down the road to a friendly man with a garage, the manifold joint was loose right enough, was probably loosened when the exhaust mountings gave way a few months ago and the exhaust was dragging on the ground for half a mile.... he tightened it up and now it's all better. MOT on Monday!!
