Model:Rover Mini Tahiti
Year:1993
Description of problem: Hey guys, my mini seems to be making a rubbing noise or a grinding sound, and it sounds like its coming from the driverside of the engine bay. not sure what it could be. could it be the waterpump going or maybe a piston? pops quite a bit at the moment too.

any comments greatly appreciated :trooper:

Can you give us a bit more information?

Do you hear the noise all the time or just when the car is moving? Does it get worse if you rev the engine?

It's not going to be the water pump if it's on the driver's side (unless you've got a LHD car!) and if a piston was doing that you'd have a very sick Mini. Does sound like it could do with a good tune-up, though.

well it sounds like its coming from there when i drive it but i may be wrong. its not there when i stop the car, but when moving its there, and when i slow down the rubbing slows down? have had the car up on my jack and taken the wheels off, nothing seems to be the problem there so i know its the not the archers or the brakes.

any ideas?

Is the sound almost a rumbling sound?

If so then get up to the speed when the sound starts, along a straight quiet road, and turn sharply left and right. If you turn right and the sound becomes quieter or stops but gets louder when you turn left then it is most likely the driver's side wheel bearing.

It starts and stop which ive recently descovered. i somtimes does it, but when it does it makes the sound from when i very pull off back to when i stop again. i know for a fact that the MOT garage didnt pick up a really unwell gaitor on the ball joint rod, many splits in it, could this be the problem?

Only recently started making the sound just as i hit a big puddle in a storm?

Cheers :D

My mini made the rumbling sound after hitting a lot of puddles when it was bad weather. It turned out to be the bearings. Try the test and see if it makes a difference.

I would doubt that a gaiter being split on a ball joint would cause they sound. A gaiter on your drive shaft however may do. If it is affected by speed and only occurs when moving then it is something along your drive train. Check to see that nothing has come loose and is against your drive shafts or any other moving part.

You may also want to check your exhaust by the differential. Mine once came loose and started rubber against it. That made a horrible grinding sound.

not your brake disk backplates rubbing??

Was just going to suggest this - the dust guards that sit behind the disk are notorious for snapping off from their mounts - with all the mud and water that gets chucked up around that area, they just rust away and start scraping against the disk.

They can be removed though - they're not essential, and replacements were pretty expensive last time I checked!

I shall also check this:) kind regards to the guy before as i think it could quite possibly be the driver side wheel bearing. when i turn left, no noise, but driving straight and turning right, lots of noise :D

i think he's hit the nail with the hammer there :)

cheers guys for the help.

Update on the rubbing noise!

Its begining to get quieter as i excelerate, then when i take my foot of the pedal its all loud again. Really annoying me, and now turning left and right sharply down a quiet road isnt making it louder / quieter so i cant work out what it is!

dragging an old thread up here but i think i might have the exact same problem after driving through a large puddle. Did you solve the problem in the end? I've checked all the obvious stuff like brakes rubbing, rubbing on the dust plates and rubbing anywhere else for that matter with nothing conclusive. There is slight play in the wheels but not a worrying amount. Any help is much appreciated.
