If the phone will work in that zone (You might need dual band / quad band for some countries.) Then your PAYG sim should work as long as it has been activated for roaming. It will cost more though while you are roaming.

Easiest thing would be to check with the mobile company. I know when I'm abroad with my mobile it costs more to dial out and send text messages. It also costs me to receive calls, and receive messages. Data is also more expensive.

I've tried using the GPS on my phone (Samsung Jet) and it's a bit hit and miss. It only works when in the window of the car (or outside) and even then, it can drop the signal as your driving round, even when surrounded by fields.

I saw this recently,

I wondered if it was any good? I can't seem to find any reviews.
All I need now is a car with, wheels, floor, seats....
I'll stop now before I depress myself.

The reason i ask is that the PAYG system in the UK is better than the one in France, but not sure if i wanted to trace the number if it'd to it when the car was in France which would be most of the time... I don't mind activating roaming etc i just need to know if it'll work, in theory it should but will will the tracking sites pick it up and trace it??

I've never known the GPS signal to drop off, the trackers do they work on the mobile phone signal and triangulate it between phone masts??
