Finally binned Vista - why did I put up with this pile of s*ite for so long??, ran an old PC with XP while I was trying to sort the HD crash out (vista sp1 instillation) and it was so nice getting back to a good basic stable platform. Anyhoo bought W7 and did a clean install and what a revelation! - this is what vista should have been all along - a well developed version of XP - so fast on start up and shut down - nice to work with, havn't finished downloading my STEAM games yet but have heard its much better with games because the processor isn't working so hard trying to keep up with vista demands all the time.
Anyone else experienced the same?

If you know how to use Vista and have a suitably specced PC (which most gamers do) then Vista does not negatively affect anything :P

My PC can run games through Steam on higher settings than my bf's 7 PC, it's about the rest of the spec, much more than the OS

I think what he's saying is that Windows 7 is nothing like the resource hogging selfish brat of an operating system that Vista is (was, depending on how you choose to see Vista :P). Vista uses alot more processing power and memory on tick over than 7 does, this gives 7 an advantage in any task, but especially so in gaming.

I mean yes, naturally you can even out the difference by increasing the spec of the Vista machine, but that's just more cost to continue to run an inferior operating system.

Lisa, you should upgrade to 7, then your machine will be even better .

cagy, unless you're a real linux fan, I wouldn't bother trying to run it everyday. You quickly realise just how much you love Windows when you have to do all the mundane tasks in Linux that Windows would normally have taken care of for you in the background without asking for as much as a thank you. Maybe I'm just lazy? Haha.

I know about linux taking a bit of getting used to.

Vista does take up a lot more room it all starts with the installation because it copies all the files to the hard drive and then installs so it does take up some room. Windows 7 takes up little room which is why it's started replacing XP on very small notebooks and low spec systems. I'll have to give it a whirl sometime.

What makes you say that 98 is better than 7?

I think you'll find 99% of design software is available for Windows and Mac, yes Macs are known to be better at handling graphics, but the software is still available to both, at least most of the time.

Suppose it depends on if you can tolerate them or not, personally I can't. Then again, I hate Apple!

I'm still an XP fan, for PC's - It was built on the stability of 98 :P

I prefer my Macs for most things - But for some reason, if I'm writing code, I prefer to use a PC.

Nothing wrong at all with XP Bean, I only upgraded because it didn't cost me anything and I like all the new fancy effects, if 7 hadn't have been as stable as XP, I'd have gone running back.

Although, XP is part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. Windows 98 was part of the 9x family.
