Hi
Just wondering about removing the sump from a standard 998cc Engine.
Can it be done with the engine in place?
Mine seems to be leaking oil from the sump gasket.
Or is there anythin else up around there it could be leaking from, its only leaking at the rear of the engine and is higher up than the gear selector.......
thanks

Define "sump gasket"
As the sump is the gearbox.
As the sump is the gearbox.

First off clean around the whole bottom of the engine as best you can, everything and anything thats accessible give it a wipe, yes its difficult but worth it, do the same up top in the engine bay, if its thats bad it will run as soon as you wipe
Leave some paper underneath and check back in the morning
The travel may start higher up than you think, if you can't see enough then run the engine for a bit and check again, there is actually only a handful of places it can leak from

The alluminum looking part at the bottom of the engine that seems to be bolted onto the block.
The bottom of the engine/gearbox that looks like a regular sump.
It seems to be held onto the block with a ring of bolts (possibly 10mm bolts)
I think its leaking between where the alluminum and block are held together so im guessing theres a gasket in there.
My question is can this be removed without taking out the engine or has the engine to be removed from the car?

I've seen it done once.... and to be honest, it's easier to take the engine out...
Yes there is a gasket ( or multiple gaskets ) between the gearbox (sump) and engine block... but this is VERY unlikely, I would do as above, clean the engine/gearbox off and then look for the leak...

i'm planning on doing the same as well i.e. replace the sump gasket without taking the engine out of its bay. is there a DIY Guide on this anywhere or can anyone give any helpful advice
thanks

No there is no guide as it's not recommended, nor easy... easier to take the engine out...
