looking at a pickup but doesnt have a reg plate or logbook with it so i dont no anything about it
all it has is a vin number but only the 11 digit vin and a commision number.

could anyone help me find the id of this car please?

also how do i go about getting the logbook too... i think it might be an old style logbook and i have heard that if it is left for
a certain time you have to reregister the vehicle and its a Q plate and i definatly dont want to do that.

Even if there isn't a logbook you can get a heritage certificate and register it as a barn find, the heritage certificate proves the date it was built so you'll get an age related plate. As for the commission number go here to get a rough idea of the age

Given that you have the chassis plate, then as above, the original identity of the vehicle that the number was given to can be obtained, either through heritage and sometimes via the DVLA.

Your only problem is then proving to the DVLA that the piece of metal to which the chassis plate is attached is the original vehicle. It's quite likely that before the DVLA will release a registration document they will want to inspect it, so my recommendation is, go through all the red tape first and make sure the vehicle has a title BEFORE you start spending money on it.. The last thing you want is to spend x thousand on the vehicle only to be informed the vehicle was scrapped 30 odd years ago, and your only option is SVA and Q plate.

You will have to buy a certificate from them.

It's not a VIN if it has a commission number. VINs were introduced in 1980, before that Minis had a chassis number and a commission number and after that just a single VIN number.

ok thanx dan, so basically all i have to do is buy a certificate from heritage and then the car is fine. how do they know what year the car is ect without the reg number or will it hav to be Q plate? so i just buy a certificate from them and then the car is fine to start restoring??

If Heritage have the info, what they will supply you with is based on the build record for the car. They don't always have the info available though. If they do, this will prove its age. Then you go to the DVLA with the certificate and numbers and see what they say. You might be able to go straight to the DVLA with just the chassis number if the car has been registered onto the modern system. If it hasn't, you will need the certificate and then you can apply for a registration. As suggested above they might want to send you for a VIC test to prove the car is the same one as the paperwork refers too, or you might find the car has already been scrapped or otherwise de-registered. In either case there are still ways to get anage related plate, but it'll be tricky and a Q is quite likely.

It would not be wise to start work until the DVLA are happy.

First of all, I apologise for piggy backing on this thread, but I have a similar/related issue. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out if you can

I am looking to buy a Mini pickup which the owner says and it is registered in Costa Rica as a 1975 (not much of a difference here, it could be any year).
I went to look for any identifying numbers and found the following series:

U/014xxxL Under the front lip of the bonnet, where it latches the body.

FE1979xx5 On the right side of the chassis next to the motor, right under the bonnet.

85HxxxPxxx19 on the engine (Someone on a different thread already shed some light to it being an 850cc and not a 1100cc as the Costarican registry shows)

I am suspicious of all three series since my search on the internet has turned nothing similar for any pickups '75 or otherwise. i suspect the engine is not an original pickup but belonged to some other Mini and was put in the pickup. As for the other numbers, I know U is for pickup, but as I understand it there should be several more letters on that series. and as for the FE, so far no search has come back with anything similar.

Does anyone at all have any idea if this is a legitimate '75 pickup, maybe not built in the UK or what these numbers mean or where they are from??

Had you considered posting some of the relevant numbers here?

also how do i go about getting the logbook too... i think it might be an old style logbook and i have heard that if it is left for a certain time you have to reregister the vehicle and its a Q plate and i definatly dont want to do that

I don't know where you get your information from but in future I'd look elsewhere.
