Hello all,

I am in need of some help! I recently brought my 2006 Audi A4 (US Spec) in for gearbox issues on acceleration, only for them to respond by saying, "new gear box needed, metal found in gearbox larger than 1mm. My wife and I are stationed here from the states located near Cambridge. they quoted me at 4500 pounds for the parts, labour and VAT. Now that comes to nearly 7000 US dollars which is about what we owe on the payments. Does anyone know of a good garage that could source the parts and do the replacing for cheaper? I feel like Audi is ripping us off big time! Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly greatly appreciated!!!! Cheers!

Jon,

There is probably an Audi owners forum of some type on-line. It might be worth tracking it
down and joining to ask if there are any specialists in the area.

The local independant garage I use for servicing our volvo are a member of this...

http://www.goodgarag...o.uk/index.html

..and this...

http://www.boschcarservice.co.uk/

....which might be of use.

Are you out of warranty?

Ask what the small pieces of metal are, if they're that large they've come from somewhere and you don't want to replace the gearbox if your pistons or something else are falling apart.

They should be able to find out from the material what the debris is.

Dave, remember that the gearbox and engine are two seperate beasts on an Audi A4...

It's a bit out of your way, probably about an hour from you, but it's worth giving them a ring.

My parents had their freelander's head gasket done here, which is a pig of a job. He did it well, and for a decent price.

I've since sent a couple of people his way, after i've suspected they were being ripped off by other garages.

For example, my girlfriend's mum was quoted £300 for a new sump. I knew this was *******, and said she probably just needed a new sump gasket. Sure enough, Steve looked at the car, and found the sump gasket was at fault. She took it to him, had the sump gasket, and a load of service items done, and paid about £150 less.

Good luck, Paul.

Try the http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/, there are a lot of very knowledgeable people on there that may be able to shed light on your problem and recommend an independent garage.
