model: austin mini mayfair
year: 1990
engine size: 1litre

hey guys. new on here and not got to much knowlage on minis. my mini has had a little misfire when it gets to 4000revs but then it got serious the other day and runs extremly ruff through out driving. it did brake down other day and had to pay to get picked up and taken home. me and a freind cleaned the carb and k+n filter with carb cleaner as it is very dirty as the manifold has snapped and is covering everything with sut and s#*t. i have been told to check that the plugs are sparking and they are. i have now been told to check the points but i am not sure how 2 do this. it would be extremly helpful if someone could foward me a link to any website that givs diagrams and instuctions of how to do it and if someone cud give me some more ideas on what else i could check??? sorry for woffleing on and if some parts are not understud jus tell me and i will try and clear it up :) thanks jay

Well,

Step 1) Buy a Haynes.
Step 2) Read it.

Really, it covers it and its going to be the best tool you ever get for a mini. As for checking points, you'll need a screw drive, feeler gauges and a oil can. But get the Haynes, it covers it in loverly detail.

Ah,

Points are in the dizzy/distributor. You have a 1liter so its probably a 59D dizzy which is similar to the 45D. The dizzy is the bit all the spark plug leads go to. It consists of a cap, rotor and a sliding plate with a vacuum system to the carb.

Pop the cap (Leave the leads on or make a diagram of how they go), pull the rotor off (slides up the shaft) and there are the points and condenser. Condenser is a big round thing and the points are just two metal contacts. As the dizzy spins the points open and close.

So, look that all up in the Haynes.

about 5 1/2 minutes in. You don't have to take the dizzy off: quite accessible through a Mini's grille. Turn the engine by putting it in gear and nudging the car back 'n forth.

Well first job will be to fix the manifold if you haven't already. Appart from anything else if its leaking like you say you'll end up gasing yourself, wonder you don't drive round with a headache.
