as in title....

when I go in a straight line, the wheel is showing straight... but then if I go round a steep corner, it will then be off center... i.e. turned slightly down to the right if ive gone round a right hand bend...

any ideas?

thanks

J

sounds like the U bolts holding your steering rack are loose. Tighten them up and you should be ok. if it doesn't work then I'd take the column off and check that the splines are all present :D

But get it fixed PRONTO!

It could be the rack is slipping through the U bolt clamps or a loose subframe. Another posibility is the column is slipping over the splines on the shaft of the rack - potentially very dangerous as you could end up with no steering whatsoever!

Check the pinch bolt at the bottom of the column is tight. I took the column out during restoration and founmd the bolt was missing!

And don't drive it till you get it fixed. It will be loose rack U bolts. Centre it up before you tighten them.

Two nuts on passenger side adjacent to the rubber grommet.
two nuts on the drivers side adjacent to where the steering column attaches to the rack...

I doubt it's the U bolts as you'd probably notice that in weird handling, too. Also the rack can't slip very far even with loose U bolts as the stud is still in the chassis hole and only has that much play. I guess it's the column slipping over the splines instead, either because of a loose or missing bolt.

Hi Gulfclubby,
This certainly CAN be caused by rack slipping through the U bolts, but yes, can be felt as weird handling... On picking up my new car 2 weeks ago, the straight ahead position swapped from 10 o clock to 2 o clock in one corner. Not fun when entering a slip road to the motorway from a roundabout...

I stopped at the next services, tightened the U bolts and all is fine !

I have tightened the U bolts... passenger side were a bit loose... (only about 2 turns though...)

have only had a short drive in it down the road... but feels like it's sorted it out for me!

thanks all.

will let you know on a longer run if its not fixed the problem!

thanks
